If you would like to create a special relationship and make a significant difference for one of the many cats and dogs from BARKS, we invite you to become a BARKS buddy. For only $10 a month, you can sponsor a furry friend and show your support for these special angels.

The Buddy program is also a great way to adopt when you can't adopt! Sound confusing? It's not. By becoming a Buddy you're creating a special bond with a furry friend and showing that you care. Your financial contribution will help to pay for food and medical needs. Your desire to form the connection is very much like an actual adoption. Sometimes, we can't have a cat or dog in the house. Allergies, space limitations, time constraints, or family concerns must take priority. With the Buddy program, you will adopt an online pet to call your very own and the connection is very real and very meaningful!

How to become a Buddy

Step One

Select an adorable Buddy that you would like to call your own.

Step Two

Click on the Be My Buddy button beneath that cat or dog. You will be able to enter your name, and if you wish, the name of someone you are honoring with this Buddy sponsorship.

Step Three

Decide how you would like to donate.

  • You can send a check ($120.00 annually) made payable to BARKS- PO Box 593, Stanhope, NJ 07874
  • You can establish an annual or monthly donation through your banking institution
  • Or you can utilize PayPal - you'll 'subscribe' to the Buddy Program which will initiate a secure, automated monthly payment from your banking institution or credit card
Step Four

You're done! We will send you a thank you card and photo shortly! If your Buddy is adopted we'll let you know the good news, and help you to find another Buddy to sponsor if you choose! (Still have questions? Try clicking on one of the Buddy buttons below for more info, or email buddy@barksinc.com.)

P.S. If you find yourself falling in love and you want to be more than just friends, please don't hesitate to contact info@barksinc.com to adopt!

See our happy happy Buddies who have found forever homes!

Rudy

Rudy

Rudy deserves some respect. We estimate his age to be approaching 20 years! But has he had a cushy life in his golden years? No, not at all. He was recently rescued near the county college and is thought to have lived entirely outside for the last 3 years. Brrrr. Sure he might appear a little rough around the edges... but in temperament he is a real sweetheart.

Rabbit

Rabbit

Rabbit is a young, sweet-natured special needs kitty who was found outside of a deli. Why the name Rabbit? It's because he kind of hops instead of walking/running. He has a weak back and possibly some neurological problems that keep him from using his legs normally. He's extremely sweet and loves attention. Poor thing, as if the legs weren't bad enough, his tongue is always sticking out of his mouth, making him sound a little congested. This sweet defenseless cat really needs an angel!

Humfree

Humfree

Humfree is a wonderfully goofy boy and is as sweet-natured as the day is long. He's a very energetic guy, loves people and wants to play all day. He's doing pretty well with leash walking and sitting when asked. He knows he can be a great addition to a home - someday that home will find him. Until then, will you be his Buddy?

Amelia

Amelia

I am Amelia and I'm a big, beautiful Chartreux. I... am the queen. And you should just know right off the bat that any ray of sunlight coming through the windows belongs to me. And don't expect me to sleep in a tidy little ball like the common kitties, I require space such that I may extend the full length of myself. It's good for the body to stretch you know. And I've got the body. As you might imagine, I relate better to my two-footed friends than these scrawny Excuses for Chartreuses that live with me. In fact, I think you just might be pretty OK. Why don't you come a little closer? Here, have a sunbeam...

Katie

Katie

Hi I'm Katie-Girl. I live with my foster family - 3 humans and several cats including my sisters Julie and Emmy. I get along with everyone! But there's one thing that makes me stand out in my family, I CAN'T BE CAUGHT!! I do not want to be held. Truthfully, I don't understand it myself. Maybe it's because I wasn't handled as a kitten? My sisters seem to enjoy my human family but I just can't take that step. My mom thinks that if she keeps talking to me and I watch my sisters, I might someday come around. I also have a medical condition, nothing too serious... and there are some meds that can help it but my fear kinda makes things difficult. Anyway, I still have a good life. My family loves me... but you know, you can never have too many buddies. Would you like to be mine? Please keep me in your thoughts, maybe I'll feel all those good vibes and it will boost my confidence. With Love, Katie.

Be My Buddy!...

Daisy Mae

DaisyMae

I am not just another crankpot, dagnabbit. Quit calling me that. As it happens, I gave birth to some perfectly lovely kittens that were adopted last year, so I must have some niceness in me. In fact, lately, you humans and kitties don't seem as bad as you used to. Why I've even let Fabio (last row, right corner) snuggle with me and groom me a bit on occasion. It's a big stinkin' lie that I let a human pet me though. And besides it only happened a few times. But hey that doesn't mean I'm turning into a big puddle of mush. It's just that as I mature, I've been uh, re-evaluating my connections to others. Maybe you know what I mean? Could you commiserate with a curmudgeonly kitty like me?

Be My Buddy!...

Tigger

Tigger

This fine brindly young fellow is Tigger - named for his tigerish stripes and his boundless bounciness. In fact, Tigger has already bounced back from a horrible ordeal - he was tied to a fire hydrant near a supermarket and abandoned. Yeesh. In spite of that, he's such a friendly boy, he just wants to be with people and is eager to please. The volunteers at the pound are teaching him Sit (bounce!), Stay (bounce!) and Bounce (bounce!). He's already good at bouncing on a leash. The only thing that could make him any more buoyant would be to have a Buddy! (Bounce bounce.. bounce? Wagwag? Slurp!)

Pauli

pauli

Zzzzzzzzzz... Does it look like I'm sleeping? Sshhh.... I'm faking it! Please don't tell on me. They're making me stay out here in the open when all I want to do is hide myself away. I don't really feel the need for a ton of company. Company makes me nervous. I do have one friend, though. Well, sort of a friend. It's my track ball toy. Thank goodness they leave that out at night. When no one's around, I creep out of my hiding space and bat it around like crazy - it's so much fun! But when I hear footsteps, whoosh it's back under the hutch for me. Hey, maybe you could be my lookout? Come to think of it, we could even have a go at a two-player game of track ball. You can be up to bat first.

Be My Buddy!...

Francesca

Francesca

Francesca is an athlete. She loves nothing more than throwing her plus-sized body around the room to chase a feather toy. Literally runs over anyone else in her path. She loves to be petted and is a big fan of turkey meat. She can be a bit bossy with other kitties. Please consider making spry Francesca your buddy!

Be My Buddy!...

Jasmine

Jasmine

My friends call me Jazzy. Yes, I have a syncopation that is all my own. Some people say I'm strange - I can dig it. Hey I can be all by myself, I can bebop all by myself. I can improvise. I've even been known to do a bit of scat singing. "Jazzy's bleating like a sheep," is what I overheard them say about it. Well, when you hear me sing, I'm a sweet as Sarah Vaughan and you may pet me. If not, you best stay away or I'll get all Miles Davis on you - yes indeed I will growl and swat. I'm not a mean thing but I have quite a swing! Right now, baby it's cold outside and I'm looking to sing a duet. If you can carry a tune in a bucket, let's get sultry. You and me and all the things you are.

Be My Buddy!...

Henry

henry

Meet Henry! He is an adorable little boxer mix pup, full of vim, vigor, exuberance and energy! He's got some funny little bowed legs - there was some concern that they might need surgery. But great news - his x-rays show he won't need it. Whew. That must be a load off for little Henry!

Smudge

Smudge

There along the Witherwale Trail, upon the riverbank, a kitty named Smudge dipped the tip of his tail then gave a solid yank. And there atop the pebbly sand near River Cloppenpout, a flippery-floppery smacked the land - I think it was a trout!

Though roads lonely-rolled like an unwelcome mat, old Smudge never missed a meal. A self-sufficient, fishing cat! - no need for rod or reel.

Oh freedom has a certain lure, and so does catching fish. Smudge would sacrifice them both if you would grant his wish: He'd much rather live in a warm happy home and be stroked by a warm happy hand. He'd curl himself up in a warm happy ball... and eat his tuna, canned.

Bently

Bently

I am one cool and laid back kind of cat. I may look like a big tuff guy, but nothing makes me happier than a scratch behind the ears, or to curl up next to one of my female furry foster friends- purrrr. I would love a buddy to watch the game with, but until I find my forever home, I could use a guy (or gal) pal!

Carol

Carol

Hi, I'm Carol. I am a sweet, but shy, ball of fluff. I came to my foster mommy's home because I was really scared in the shelter. I was still scared for a long time, but now I'm not anymore. I enjoy sleeping, playing with my toys, following my foster sisters around, and sitting around and looking pretty, which is what I do best. While I would like a forever home, having a new friend would be nice too!

Be My Buddy!...

Sonya

Sonya

I’ll admit it, sometimes I can be a bit cranky. But most of the time, I just want to curl up, get a big kiss on the head, and nap. When you get older, you’ll understand how this works. A little TLC and a Buddy goes a long way at my age; I’m only finicky about food, not friends!

Be My Buddy!...

Sasha

Sasha

Sasha is a beautiful girl and will make a wonderful loyal pet for the right experienced, adult-only home. She has issues with food aggression that need to be managed safely and, with proper training, corrected. Wouldn't you like to be her friend while she waits for that special home?

Porter

Porter

Is this a face or what? Looks, brains, purrsonality- look no further! I’m a type “A” cat who gets into a bit of mischief at adoption days. My foster mom says that’s why I still haven’t found my forever family. But, to know me is to love me- Please be my Buddy!

Rajah

Rajah

Greetings! I am Rajah. Yes, you are correct! In fact I am a prince. Of course, I used to be a dumpster prince. Not exactly my first choice for a palace, you know. And the food there made me sick as a dog. Luckily I was found by BARKS. They restored me to health and I lead a much more dignified existence now, to be sure. BARKS would love for me to find a forever home - they've been looking on my behalf for quite a while now - but you see, I'm a timid prince. I need someone who would be patient and understanding with me... and not mind if I'm a little on the shy side. I know my family is out there somewhere and I hope to find them someday, even if they don't have a princely red velvet pillow with gold tassles for me to lie upon. Their love will be my pillow. Would you like to be my red velvet Buddy in the meantime?

Acorn

Acorn

Hi Hi Hi Hello there!
I'm a little Acorn with a great big purrrr. When I meet new humans, it can be difficult to get me out of my shell. But I absolutely adore my kitty-friends here at my foster home! And I do warm up to people... it just takes me a while. Here's a hint, I love belly rubs! I know that someday, the right person will take the time to get past my shyness and through to my belly (purrrrr!). Until then, won't you be my Belly Buddy?

Be My Buddy!...

Buttons

buttons

Buttons' sisters and mother were adopted a long time ago. Such a scared kitty, she gets too upset to attend adoption days so she's still in her foster home... waiting, waiting... waiting to be adopted. It would take such a special family to give her the time and space to adjust. But she's waiting. In the meantime, she could sure use another friend.

Be My Buddy!...

Chiquita

Chiquita

¡Hola!   I am Chiquita! And in case you are wondering, I do like to be the top banana whenever people are doling out affection. Si, if you give me the petting and the pampering and the catnip that I desire, I may even attempt a little Carmen Miranda dance for you. And that's not so easy to do without the hips you know! Well since you can't see me dance, you'll have to settle for a song. Here goes:  I am Chiquita the kitty and I've come to say, I would be so very happy for a place to stay. But homes aren't like bananas, they don't grow on trees, so for now I'd love a Buddy, won't you pick me, please?!

Be My Buddy!...

Bambi

Bambi

Hi. I'm Bambi. While I can be a little shy at first, once you get to know me, I really warm up. Get goofy even. You'd never know that from my picture, would you. Well I actually just love to play and get new toys, and I'm no snob, one of my favorite playthings is an empty paper towel roll! Yesiree I figure I'm recycling. But as for me, right now I'm like a spare part that nobody needs. Won't you send a little love my way? It can be new, old, warm, cold - because no matter what, it will be new to me and I promise to put it to good use.

Randy

Randy

Hi baseball fans and everyone else! My name is Randy A.K.A Randy Johnson, you know... "The Big Unit. " But you don't have to be a baseball fan to appreciate me. I'm very lovable and I greet people when they come to my foster family's house. Although I've been diagnosed with FIV, I'm tough and in good health. Boy would I like to find a home where I could get a lot of attention and love... because there are so many other cats here besides me and I could do with a little less sharing! Hey, maybe you'd you like to hang out with me sometime, watch a game? (...preferably the Yankees!) Can you imagine us on the couch, getting comfy? I wouldn't be fussy, just some nuzzling would do. Yes I can see it now, it's wonderful. How about you? Can you imagine being my Buddy?

Be My Buddy!...

Pepper

Pepper

My name is Pepper and I don't have some big ol' rambling sad tale to tell you about my life. I'm just a shy kinda guy, end of story. I came here just out of kittenhood and it's been over a year now. And you know how it is, the outgoing, affectionate cats get adopted and the tearjerkers get a Buddy. Well, I can't be someone I'm not. I trust that there's somebody out there who will understand me and love me just the way I am... I just hope they find me soon.

Tinkerbelle

Tinkerbelle

Dear little Tinkerbelle is a leukemia-positive kitten. She was a stray and a kind person brought her in to the vet. Now she's looking for a forever home. Tinkerbelle is ultra sweet and affectionate. She is a 'special needs' kitty and must go to a home without cats or with other leukemia-positive kitties. Because finding a home for her can be a bit more challenging, she would love to have a Buddy who is thinking about her even if she can't be with you!

Bella

Bella

I was brought into BARKS as a kitten with kittens of my own. We were all strays. We were malnourished and in need of some veterinary care. My kitties have found fabulous homes, but I stayed behind, allowing them to go first --like a good mommy should. Though I would love to have a forever home, I'm safe now until I do. But, my spunky personality could be shared with a Buddy, and that would be great. Please smile at my picture, because I'm smiling back!

Be My Buddy!...

Angus

Angus

My name is Angus and I yearn for the Highlands... ah to be roaming the rugged cliffs... wait, that sounds cold. What if the wind starts up? Hmmm. How about a hug instead? That's it... I'm going to take a nap and dream of a crackling fireplace. Perhaps you'll send a warm thought my way?

Be My Buddy!...

Beans, the Dreamer

Beans

How neatly a cat sleeps, sleeps with its paws and its posture.

I should like to sleep like a cat, with all the fur of time, with a tongue rough as flint.

Sleep, sleep cat of the night. Take care of all our dreams; control the obscurity of our slumbering prowess with your relentless heart and the great ruff of your tail.

-snippets from Pablo Neruda's poem, Cat's Dream

Be My Buddy!...

Blossom

Blossom

I'm here at the window and I'm so tired of watching old white winter and hearing the wind blow. If I had a forever home and my very own family, every season would be Spring. Help me Blossom in the cold. Let me stand-in for your daffodils. Sing to me the ode to Spring. Please be my warmhearted, cold weather friend... please be my Buddy.

Be My Buddy!...

Buddy

Buddy

Buddy is a little worried. It's right there on his face for the world to see. He doesn't know why he's in the pound. A puggle like Buddy should be a happy doggie - he likes to be with people. He likes being a puggle! But for now he's just pacing and worrying. If only we could tell him that it's going to be ok, that a cutiepie like him is sure to find a home soon. If only we could tell him, it's ok, he has a friend. Oh wait. We can.

Lindy

Lindy

I am the sweetest and most adorable little girl. I know you've heard that about other cats, but with me it's really, really true. I was once semi-feral, and now I know that people are the best, especially when they give me a little scratch under the neck. My foster mom knows that when I find a home, those parents are going to be really loved! But until then, I can show my love from a distance and know that you are giving me a big "cyber hug!" Please be my buddy!

Be My Buddy!...

Buddy

Buddy

Hi there. My name is Buddy. I got my name in a very special way. A little girl gave it to me for her birthday. In fact, she donated her whole birthday to the animals of BARKS. So even though I'm still kind of scared about being here at the shelter, I know now that humans can be pretty darn nice, and I hope I'll have a family to call my own someday soon. Thank you Kelsey, for being my Buddy!

Carlisle

Carlisle

I am always dressed for success and love to be noticed! However, I often find mischief before it finds me. Don't get me wrong, I am one friendly cat who will warm your heart. I just can't help the spunky side of me-- creative if you will. Adventurous to some. A renaissance cat- yes- that's a good word. It does make it harder for cat brothers and sisters to keep up, but humans find me charming! So... until I find the right venue for my festive spirit, I would love a Buddy who recognizes that some of us just have a bit more character than others!

Pebbles

Pebbles

Pebbles came from the pound to her foster home. She was very afraid and didn’t like to be picked up. She still doesn’t like that... but she does like to be petted when she isn’t afraid. Pretty Pebbles gets along with other cats, especially Fluffy (to the right), but she can’t go to adoption days. She just gets too scared of the pet carrier. Sure, these are obstacles to finding a forever home, but Pebbles still wants to be loved. Maybe you have a little love to spare?

Be My Buddy!...

Fluffy

Fluffy

Fluffy is a beautiful cat. She loves to be petted when she is lying down but will not let you pick her up. She is chatty with all the other cats in her foster home and talks a blue streak when she wants to be fed! Her buddy is Pebbles (to the left). She'd love to find a forever home but in the mean time, this wonderful cat would like to talk you into being her buddy... whaddya say?

Rusty

Rusty

Rusty was adopted out as a little kitten. Then, his family moved and could not take him so he came back to his foster home. He is an "alpha cat" and runs the other cats around... but loves best to go for a walk with the dogs! He is an inside/outside cat and loves to sleep in the laundry basket. Rusty adores people, but he's not too crazy about adoption days. He and his alpha personality don't appreciate being in a crate, which makes it hard for potential adopters to see his sweet side. Until someone breaks through to discover how nice this boy can be, won't you be his pal?

Margo

Margo

Margo is one hundred and ten percent feline. She is a regal queen of the shelter jungle, and sometimes you almost expect to hear her roar. Like other royals, her majesty feels obligated to carry herself proudly and keep up her guard. But the truth is that Margo craves a behind-the-ear rub now and then, although it has to be on her terms. She's been waiting a long time for that special adopter to offer her a throne, or at least put her on a pedestal. In the meantime, she is graciously accepting felicitations from her minions.. er that is.. she would really love to have a Buddy. And haven't you always wished for friends in high places?

Be My Buddy!...

Lacey

Lacey

Lacey's eyes are saucerfuls of secrets. She is a cartoon cat! Oh how she loves to play. Those eyes go boing boing back and forth back and forth watching anything dangled in front of her. She can entertain and be entertained for hours. The only catch is, she's a fraidy cat. She will let you pet her, loves it in fact, as long as she feels safe. But she gets a little fruitloops when you try to pick her up. And this has kept her from being adopted for over 2 years now! It's truly a tragedy. There is still hope, however, that some understanding adopter will give this little doll the space she needs. Would you be Lacey's friend in the meantime?

Dude

Dude

I know, I know, the resemblance to Jeff Bridges is uncanny, uncatty even... some people have even called me the Big Meowski. Hey. I don't mind. I'm a laid-back, low-key kind of catdude. I suppose that's why I get overlooked at adoptions, too much mellow and not enough me me me. Where were we? Oh yeah, me. So, I'm hanging out, waiting for my forever home. It's all good, but you know, I get by with a little help from my friends. So like, don't bogart the love... besides, don't you want to be able to say... "Yo, that Dude is my Buddy!"

Be My Buddy!...

Felicia

Felicia

Did you know... the name Felicia comes from the Latin word meaning lucky, fortunate... happy. Well, I do like to keep a positive outlook on life! There are so many small things in my life that are wonderful. I suppose I could let them be overshadowed by the fact that I don't have a home of my very own, but I refuse to. Every day I wake up in a warm place, there is a full bowl of kitty kibble for me to munch, fresh water for me to lick off of my paws, and more often than not, someone gives me a kind look and a stroke on the cheek. Do you celebrate the small wonderful things in your own life? Maybe you'd like to be my friend..? I would feel lucky, fortunate, happy... to be able to say you're my Buddy.

Be My Buddy!...

Apache

Apache

May the sun
bring you energy by day,

May the moon
softly restore you by night,

May the rain
wash away your worries,

May the breeze
blow new strength into your being.

May you walk gently through the world

and know its beauty all the days of your life.

-An Apache Blessing

Be My Buddy!...

Pita

Pita

Hi my name is Pita! I'm a very talkative little girl! I am very friendly and playful and I love people. I also love to explore! Yessiree, I am active and smart. What a package, eh? I'm here at BARKS with my sisters - and we're waiting for our forever homes. I'm pretty confident that our special people will find us and we'll have families of our own. And I'm pretty sure I'd love a Buddy until then!

Be My Buddy!...

Byron

Byron

And on that cheek, and o'er that brow, So soft, so calm, yet eloquent, The smiles that win, the tints that glow, But tell of days in goodness spent, A mind at peace with all below, A heart whose love is innocent!

- from Lord Byron's poem, She Walks in Beauty

Be My Buddy!...

Rascal

Rascal

What on earth is a gorgeous pastel calico like Rascal doing in a shelter? Why hasn't she been adopted? Beautiful Rascal probably got her name because of her mercurial personality... she's a wee bit fickle. She can be warm and enjoy being stroked, but it stops on her dime. Well, poor Rascal's got different people sticking their hands in her cage every day, day and night, whether she likes it or not. So of course she exercises her kitty volition now and then, it's all she's got. Chances are good that a warm, consistent home would bring out her better nature. And so, the wait is on for someone who will give this little goddess time and space to adjust. (Rascal probably thinks some extra treats wouldn't hurt either...!)

Be My Buddy!...

Miles

Miles

Miles has been an enigma wrapped in a conundrum wrapped in a mystery since kittenhood, which was just yesterday. Even as a tiny tiny kitten, he was a regular hiss factory. He hissed so much, hissed at anyone, hissed at anything, hissed at nothing, and all the time... it was almost comical. But it was also sad to see this cute little guy seem so upset. Happily, thanks to patient and nurturing volunteers, he is breaking the habit, slowly but surely. Now young Miles looks forward to being petted and he especially loves a little rubadub on the backbone - no hissing at that! Hopefully he will be discovered by a lover of quirky cats soon. In the meantime, please be hiss Buddy!

Eddie

Eddie

Eddie is a sweet older gentleman. His vision and hearing aren't the best but his sense of smell and appetite are still quite intact. So although he's a bit timid when your shadow comes into view, once he gets a taste of those treats in your hand, he's your pal for the unseeable future! Look into your heart and please consider making Eddie your Buddy.

Tristan

Tristan

I am big in stature and huge in personality. And, I like it at my BARKS foster home. So, though some have wanted to adopt me, that whole pet carrier thing does not make me happy! I get cranky and decide that I am quite comfortable with the familiar. I am the big man on campus and want to retain my status for now. One day, the right situation will come up, and that forever family is going to be really lucky. But until then, I would like a Buddy who shares a love of life and a warm heart regardless of his or her environment.

Be My Buddy!...

Fabio

Fabio

Yes, it was a lady who named me, but admittedly, I kind of like the name. I'm a very sweet and friendly cat who just hasn't found the right home yet. Sometimes, I can be a bit cautious around unfamiliar people, but it comes with the name, the notoriety, the cameras... you get it. Now, just so you know, a buddy is a buddy. Don't let my name discourage guys from considering me! In fact, I could use the camaraderie. But...if a female admirer notices me first, I am more than alright with that too!
