If you met me when I first came to BARKS I would have run away in fear. Now, I know that everyone loves me! I may be little in stature, but I have a big heart and I’m darn cute too! Though I would love to find a home, I am ready to be your Buddy and show off my colorful little self!
Rudy deserves some respect. We estimate his age to be approaching 20 years! But has he had a cushy life in his golden years? No, not at all. He was recently rescued near the county college and is thought to have lived entirely outside for the last 3 years. Brrrr. Sure he might appear a little rough around the edges... but in temperament he is a real sweetheart.
Tanya used to be here with her brother Vinnie. He was the more outgoing of the pair and would give his sister the attention she didn't seek from humans. She's been kind of lonely ever since he got adopted. She's a smart shy girl though, and she's learned to come out of her shell enough to garner some nice strokes on the cheek now and then. When you say 'Hi Tanya', she says hello back by meowing almost inaudibly and rubbing against the crate. She tilts her head and smiles somewhat sadly, like a character in a Tim Burton cartoon. Tanya is a girl who can get by on just a little, she is tidy and low maintenance. Oh these gems that are overlooked. While she waits for an adopter who can recognize the beauty in her subtlety, please consider making gentle Tanya your friend.
Pete has an extraordinary story. He was that clichéd cat of books and movies... stuck in the upper branches of a slender tree (probably chased there by a coyote or fox). He was there for 3 days and nights, meowling away, scared out of his wits. BARKS was called in by kind neighbors and the rest is a happy ending, thanks to his namesake, Pete the tree guy. Well, not quite a happy ending. Poor Pete is still at the pound, despite the fact that he has gone from semi-feral to warm and cuddly. He's pining for a buddy, hoping he won't be left high and dry.
Hmmph. I wish I felt more like my name. Frankly I'm starting to feel a little depressed. It goes away for a while every time someone stops in to see me - I can't help myself - I get so happy and hopeful. But they leave me here every time. And every time, I let out a big sigh and trudge back to my bed. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Why do they leave? I'm happy to be with people, I wag my tail, I pay attention, I'm polite, I'm petite, I love getting a treat... I don't step on feet. Do you have any ideas? I'm all ears. There was a time, not so long ago, when I had someone special to coo at me, rub my belly and cradle my head in their hands. I was somebody's best friend. There must be a way to get back to that place. Please. Tell me how.
Jewel was rescued as a kitten near a major highway. She was alone and hungry. She's grown into a beautiful torby (mix of tabby and tortoiseshell) and the distinctive mark on top of her head is what inspired her name. No one can understand why this beautiful kitty has not yet found a home. Won't you be her pal until she does?
Speckles is a gorgeous Australian Shepherd/Border Collie mix with amazing Catahoula Leopard Dog coloring. Of course, those are all guesses - but for sure, she's a lovely blue merle-colored fluffy dog. She was picked up as a stray and she is very scared and anxious. She keeps a wary eye on anyone that comes close. Relaxes just a bit for a treat though - so hopefully she will adjust and find herself a nice home eventually. In the meantime, this spotty girl needs a steady friend.
It's all like some weird, horrible dream. There I was with my family, in our house, and the days went in and out and I was fed and exercised and loved and happy. I guess I didn't know how good I had it. The next thing I knew, everyone was gone and the house was empty. I was still there but my family was all gone. Gosh I was so lonely. A kind person found me and brought me to the shelter and now people walk me, pet me, feed me, give me treats. But I've known a real home and boy would I love to have one again.... with people in it... ones that stick around. Please be my buddy and keep me company while I wait.
Abby is a beautiful long and limber hound-doggy. Her face lights up in anticipation as you walk towards her and that tail starts going fwap fwap fwap. She should be someone's best pal right now, playing fetch and walking alongside them on scenic hikes, but instead she's at the pound. It makes a person feel like things aren't right with the world. No doubt Abby would agree. Please help make things right with Abby's world and be her friend.
Patrick got lost. Patrick was found. But Patrick's family decided they didn't want to own a dog anymore. Now he's unfound and he's stuck at the pound. It's not his fault. He's a gentle giant. A sweet dog who has all but given up on getting any love or attention. It shows as a slump of his posture, a droop of his head when you walk away from his cage. He's only a year and a half old. Just a youngster and already he's had to deal with such rejection. Patrick deserves to feel the love of a consistently caring and accepting family. In the meantime, please be his friend.
Meet Henry! He is an adorable little boxer mix pup, full of vim, vigor, exuberance and energy! He's got some funny little bowed legs - there was some concern that they might need surgery. But great news - his x-rays show he won't need it. Whew. That must be a load off for little Henry!
Hi, my name is Davey. My friends Caroline and Val saved me from a terrible fate! I somehow got into a very tall dumpster near the pound and couldn't get out! I cried and cried until someone heard me and it was just in the nick of time as there was going to be a load of stuff dumped on top of me! I can't remember if I jumped in myself or someone threw me away when they found out I was FIV positive. But FIV is no death sentence, I plan to have a healthy, happy, long life. Anyhow my friends rescued me and gave me a dinner fit for a king! I'm so grateful. I've had a rough time in the past - I have the scars to prove it -but I'm super-affectionate to anyone who gives me attention. Won't you give me a chance, I really need a home where I don't have to worry about catching a cold or sharing my humans!! I love to hug and oh, I talk too! Please be my Buddy.
Margo is one hundred and ten percent feline. She is a regal queen of the shelter jungle, and sometimes you almost expect to hear her roar. Like other royals, her majesty feels obligated to carry herself proudly and keep up her guard. But the truth is that Margo craves a behind-the-ear rub now and then, although it has to be on her terms. She's been waiting a long time for that special adopter to offer her a throne, or at least put her on a pedestal. In the meantime, she is graciously accepting felicitations from her minions.. er that is.. she would really love to have a Buddy. And haven't you always wished for friends in high places?
Buddy is a little worried. It's right there on his face for the world to see. He doesn't know why he's in the pound. A puggle like Buddy should be a happy doggie - he likes to be with people. He likes being a puggle! But for now he's just pacing and worrying. If only we could tell him that it's going to be ok, that a cutiepie like him is sure to find a home soon. If only we could tell him, it's ok, he has a friend. Oh wait. We can.
Hi there. My name is Buddy. I got my name in a very special way. A little girl gave it to me for her birthday. In fact, she donated her whole birthday to the animals of BARKS. So even though I'm still kind of scared about being here at the shelter, I know now that humans can be pretty darn nice, and I hope I'll have a family to call my own someday soon. Thank you Kelsey, for being my Buddy!
Cosmo is a comical cocker spaniel! What a beautiful little apricot rug of a doggie - friendly and eager to please. Strikes silly poses! Wonderful wrinkles in his cocker brow. He loves everyone, but every dog needs a special buddy. Please be Cosmo's!
Miles has been an enigma wrapped in a conundrum wrapped in a mystery since kittenhood, which was just yesterday. Even as a tiny tiny kitten, he was a regular hiss factory. He hissed so much, hissed at anyone, hissed at anything, hissed at nothing, and all the time... it was almost comical. But it was also sad to see this cute little guy seem so upset. Happily, thanks to patient and nurturing volunteers, he is breaking the habit, slowly but surely. Now young Miles looks forward to being petted and he especially loves a little rubadub on the backbone - no hissing at that! Hopefully he will be discovered by a lover of quirky cats soon. In the meantime, please be hiss Buddy!
Sasha is a beautiful girl and will make a wonderful loyal pet for the right experienced, adult-only home. She has issues with food aggression that need to be managed safely and, with proper training, corrected. Wouldn't you like to be her friend while she waits for that special home?
Lacey's eyes are saucerfuls of secrets. She is a cartoon cat! Oh how she loves to play. Those eyes go boing boing back and forth back and forth watching anything dangled in front of her. She can entertain and be entertained for hours. The only catch is, she's a fraidy cat. She will let you pet her, loves it in fact, as long as she feels safe. But she gets a little fruitloops when you try to pick her up. And this has kept her from being adopted for over 2 years now! It's truly a tragedy. There is still hope, however, that some understanding adopter will give this little doll the space she needs. Would you be Lacey's friend in the meantime?
Eddie is a sweet older gentleman. His vision and hearing aren't the best but his sense of smell and appetite are still quite intact. So although he's a bit timid when your shadow comes into view, once he gets a taste of those treats in your hand, he's your pal for the unseeable future! Look into your heart and please consider making Eddie your Buddy.
Greetings! I am Rajah. Yes, you are correct! In fact I am a prince. Of course, I used to be a dumpster prince. Not exactly my first choice for a palace, you know. And the food there made me sick as a dog. Luckily I was found by BARKS. They restored me to health and I lead a much more dignified existence now. BARKS would love for me to find a forever home - but you see, I'm a timid prince. I need someone who would be patient and understanding with me... and not mind if I'm a little on the shy side. I know my family is out there somewhere and I hope to find them someday, even if they don't have a princely red velvet pillow with gold tassles for me to lie upon. Their love will be my pillow. Would you like to be my red velvet Buddy in the meantime?
There along the Witherwale Trail, upon the riverbank, a kitty named Smudge dipped the tip of his tail then gave a solid yank. And there atop the pebbly sand near River Cloppenpout, a flippery-floppery smacked the land - I think it was a trout!
Though roads lonely-rolled like an unwelcome mat, old Smudge never missed a meal. A self-sufficient, fishing cat! - no need for rod or reel.
Oh freedom has a certain lure, and so does catching fish. Smudge would sacrifice them both if you would grant his wish: He'd much rather live in a warm happy home and be stroked by a warm happy hand. He'd curl himself up in a warm happy ball... and eat his tuna, canned.
Hello! I am Weeman! Heehee, funny name huh? It stuck from when I was a tiny kitten. I'm a big friendly boy now, all growed up but still spunky and sweet. I get along with children and with dogs - I'm just that easy-going! I just have a wee problem, I'm still here in the pound. They're good to me here but I need my own person or people - I have so much love to give. Until I wee-locate, please make me, Weeman, your wee friend. Wheeee!
Humfree is a wonderfully goofy boy and is as sweet-natured as the day is long. He's a very energetic guy, loves people and wants to play all day. He's doing pretty well with leash walking and sitting when asked. He knows he can be a great addition to a home - someday that home will find him. Until then, will you be his Buddy?
Is this a face or what? Looks, brains, purrsonality- look no further! I’m a type “A” cat who gets into a bit of mischief at adoption days. My foster mom says that’s why I still haven’t found my forever family. But, to know me is to love me- Please be my Buddy!
Pepper - the b/w kitty
Don't hate me because I'm beautiful. Sure I've been known to strike a pose now and then, and I've heard them coo and awwww when I do. But gee whiz, they never do any more than that. No adoption applications, no "This is the one!" exclamations. What, did I forget my deoderant or something? Should I do a little dance? Backflip? Purr? Meow? Don't meow? Aaargh! What is it that I need to do to show people that I'm a nice kitty and would love to be part of a family. I'm a cat at my wit's end and I sure would like a friend!
No buddies love me better...
makes me feel sad for the rest. Nobody loves me half as good as you two. Buddies, you're the best!
I wasn't lookin', but somehow you found me.
I tried to hide cuz you made a loud noise.
But like heaven above me, the humans who love me are better than a whole room full of toys.
The way that you hold me, whenever you hold me, there's some kind of magic inside you, that keeps you sponsorin' needy furry friends... how'd you get to be so gosh darn good?
Well hello there! Please show me to the kitchen, I'm hungry. I'm always hungry. And I'm always friendly! Let's chat about how friendly I am... maybe over a big dish of kibble? Or better yet, let's gnaw on some treats and I will tell ya how I love love love ya. Yes I think my stomach and my heart fused together a long time ago. Is that a bad thing? And although I can't get by on love alone, eating is not much fun without a friend. So whaddya say let's do lunch!!
Hi, my name is Haley and I am a sweet, loving kitty with a china doll face and a bunny fur coat. I have been at the pound for so long and I wish I could find a human to love me as much as I would love them. I am going cage crazy...I give kisses and hugs and even "love bites" to my friends at the shelter who take care of me everyday. They give me so much attention but I long for a family of my own. I have to be honest, I have a little issue with needing a kitty box all to myself and.. it has to be clean. Maybe you would feel the same way? But I promise I will try my best to do the right thing for the right person who will love me unconditionally. Please be my Buddy! PS: I love to cuddle!
This fine brindly young fellow is Tigger - named for his tigerish stripes and his boundless bounciness. In fact, Tigger has already bounced back from a horrible ordeal - he was tied to a fire hydrant near a supermarket and abandoned. Yeesh. In spite of that, he's such a friendly boy, he just wants to be with people and is eager to please. The volunteers at the pound are teaching him Sit (bounce!), Stay (bounce!) and Bounce (bounce!). He's already good at bouncing on a leash. The only thing that could make him any more buoyant would be to have a Buddy! (Bounce bounce.. bounce? Wagwag? Slurp!)
Hi. I'm Bambi. While I can be a little shy at first, once you get to know me, I really warm up. Get goofy even. You'd never know that from my picture, would you. Well I actually just love to play and get new toys, and I'm no snob, one of my favorite playthings is an empty paper towel roll! Yesiree I figure I'm recycling. But as for me, right now I'm like a spare part that nobody needs. Won't you send a little love my way? It can be new, old, warm, cold - because no matter what, it will be new to me and I promise to put it to good use.
Lalalala Hello! I am Lala! I'm a happy girl and I love to love people, but I'm a little less carefree than you might guess from my lalala singing. Right now I'm just a furry bird in a stainless steel cage. They come to the door of my pen and tell me I'm a pretty girl, that I'm a nice girl.... that not everyone is prejudiced against my breed and that I'll find a forever home soon. So I'm going to hope it's all true. And if you tell me different I'll just lalalala right over you. I'll be here, lala, singing, lala, waiting, lalala. Why don't you pull up a chair and accompany me and lalalalalalala, I'll love you.
This beautiful girl is Mitzi! She is very Mitzterious! Why? Because she is a lovely, friendly, sweet-natured kitty and yet she has been at the shelter for over a year with no adoption applications! What a puzzler! How befuddling! But here's one solution: Be Mitzi's friend while she waits for her new family to find her.
Look Deep Into My Eyes... yes that's it... good, good.
Now You Are Getting Very Sleepy... yes, yes, that's it... close your eyes...

I Mean, You Are Getting Very Friendly... yes, relax, keep your eyes closed, that's it...
You Can See Yourself Becoming Very Friendly With Felines... Small Gray Felines...
...Named Corky... hey! keep those eyes closed!
Very Friendly. Yes. Corky.
Now When I Snap My Fingers... ughh... umm.. Ok, When I Meow, You Will Awaken And Click On The 'Be My Buddy' Button And Then You Will Be My Human Slave.. err.. umm... My Wonderful BARKS Buddy.
I was brought into BARKS as a kitten with kittens of my own. We were all strays. We were malnourished and in need of some veterinary care. My kitties have found fabulous homes, but I stayed behind, allowing them to go first --like a good mommy should. Though I would love to have a forever home, I'm safe now until I do. But, my spunky personality could be shared with a Buddy, and that would be great. Please smile at my picture, because I'm smiling back!
Angel came to BARKS with a condition called 'Entropion'. Her eyelids were turned inwards and hurting her like the dickens. In spite of her pain and poor vision, she was still so sweet and loving - and that's how she got her name. BARKS arranged for Angel to have surgery on her eyes. You can still see suture marks on her lids because she's still healing, but she is getting better all the time. Angel is very talkative and perks up any time there is a gentle hand (or some canned cat food) nearby. Give this angel some happy blue skies to go with her blue eyes - be her friend while she waits for a special someone to call her own.
Hi my name is Pita! I'm a very talkative little girl! I am very friendly and playful and I love people. I also love to explore! Yessiree, I am active and smart. What a package, eh? I'm here at BARKS with my sisters - and we're waiting for our forever homes. I'm pretty confident that our special people will find us and we'll have families of our own. And I'm pretty sure I'd love a Buddy until then!
My name is Mathilda I don't like to waltz, don't like to waltz, don't like to waltz. So I'm not perfect, we all have our faults, all have our faults, all have our faults. I'm just a cat with her feet on the ground. Living in foster-care, not at the pound. You want this dizzying poem to end? Click on the button and make me your friend. Make me your friend. Make me your friend.
This is Lewis! He was found with a mangled leg and a mouthful of broken teeth! It's suspected that he was caught in a leg snare and tried to chew his way out. Ouch! And now he's tested positive for FIV. This poor guy is a sore sight for eyes but he's one of the sweetest cats you will ever meet. He talks to you and tries to run to you, as best he can, if you call to him. Due to his girth and the mangled front paw, he looks more like a little walrus lumbering... poor kitty. He loves to brushed and petted and has the deepest most rhythmic purr ever. He gets along with the other cats too. Lewis needs a kind, sweet understanding person and a home that is easy for him to navigate. Because of the FIV, he should be the only kitty or live with other FIV kitties. It takes time to find a special home like that. Please consider choosing Lewis as your Buddy - he could use a friend!
